OneWorld

OneWorld

I was assigned an article ”Opgroeien terwijl de wereld in brand staat” (=Growing up while the world is on fire), for that article I designed a cover, opening spread, follow-up spread and a wordmark.

Research

Before designing the magazine, I first had to have a better idea of the article. That’s why I did research using a mindmap.

Design

After I had a better idea of what the article was about, I started designing. I made sketches for the cover, the spreads and the wordmark.

Wordmark

When I came up with my wordmark, I thought of the value that OneWorld stands for: ”contemporary”. From this value I found different associations that fit in; such as ”current”, ”modern” and ”recent”.
This final result was the best fit for these values: the letters are in the shape of a wave which stands for a new movement, and the wordmark is in the shape of a globe which definates on the name ”OneWorld”.

Cover

As a cover I made an illustration that fit the theme: climate change. On the cover you see a guy with gas inside, which stands for people being the biggest polluters on earth. I used the same font as in the spreads. I have done this so that everything remains a good whole.
I experimented a lot with a lot of different cover ideas and styles and this was the final result, it was an educational process.

Opening Spread

I used InDesign, to create the opening spread. As a title I chose an impactful font that fits well with the subject of climate change and it gives the same feeling as with protest signs. In addition, two literal photos of climate change can be seen.

Follow-up Spread

The photos on the follow-up spread are figurative photos of climate change that I have placed at the edge of the spread so that it gives more peace of mind. During the design I also used different margins to give it a real magazine feel. The spread is mainly in the colors black and red and looks a bit scary because the article aims to make people aware of climate change.
Creating the spreads was an educational process.
